Yesterday, someone wrote about volume problems with After Dark. I can't even
get any sound out if AD. Whenever it starts up, it gives me some error
message. How do you configure After Dark to work with GUS? I tried the
setup option in the control panel, but it won't let me input a device driver
-- it just gives me a blank field.

We got the Gravis Demo here at our company Alternative Software in Perth
W.A We chucked it on a machine, and well , my first thought was...
"yuk!" The Demo is a batch file which calls up a host of other programs
(like the caveman, 3D Demo, 2nd Reality etc etc) but with a bit of
hacking here and there, I got it working no worries. Theres a section
(module I should say) that allows for a SB16 and Gravis in the same
machine and what it does is play a sample/MIDI file through the
SB16 and then the GUS and well, notice the difference!! (guess which one
sounds better??? ;)
Its a good collection of stuff. Hats off to John Smith and Gravis.
Regards
Nasir David.
P.S I'm not allowed to upload it anywheres (the BOSS!) , besides its
20Mb of stuff and at 2400bps....... ?

Fellow GUSers!
I was trying to run Mega-Em last night to try out the new Tie Fighter
playable demo. When I did, emuset complained that I was missing a patch
called CHARANG.PAT (the Gen MIDI name is Lead 5 (charang)). I looked
everywhere for this patch! I even checked the old 2.05 installation disks
I got with the GUS originally. But it was nowhere in sight. I finally got
Mega-Em to load by copying CHIFLEAD.PAT to CHARANG.PAT. But I'd prefer to
get the real thing. Could someone uuencode and send this patch to me, or
at least point me to where I could get it?

Subject: Dolby Surround/3-D Holographic
Well,
You see Dolby Surround Sound and Focal Point 3-D Holographic sound are
completely different processes.
Dolby Surround sound is basically a multi-phonic sound source (i.e.
recorded in 4 or 5 tracks--stereophonic is in 2 tracks) that automatically
pans from speaker to speaker (well, not really--just volume levels, but...)
to ACTUALLY PROVIDE MOTION in the sound. It requires more than 2 speakers.
Focal Point 3-D (Advanced Gravis's method) is for only 2, repeat, 2
sources--which for the highest quality are the left and right drivers in a
set of good headphones. 3-D Sound uses special pre-processors and moonlit
swampwater to FOOL the ears into believing a sound exists in a particular
location relative to the head. Such as directly behind, forward and off to
the right, etc. Because of the way it modulates the sound, speakers or any
open sound source gets in the way. To work at it's optimum, each ear
requires total isolation from the other. It is a two part thing, one's left
ear must have part A and the right ear must have part B.
Yes, it *can* work (a little) with open speakers, but for the reasons I
have outlined, not very well.
Is it impressive? Yes and no. No, the demos "I've" seen do not fool
the ears all the time or always automatically. BUT BUT BUT it WILL when one
has a visual clue to base it on, such as in a 3-D game with Holographic sound
support.
Later.
--Joe
(I am told by a friend of a dentistry demo in 3-D sound that cannot be
released--Focal Point's exclusive property--that makes you turn your head to
see what is "clanking" behind you....and he says "Don't even ASK me about the
drill!" <G>)

Subject: DPMI/VCPI/XMS/EXTENDED etc.
Thank you, whoever, for giving a good, brief explanation on what all these
DOS extenders are about. Just curious, someone told me that XMS and
extended memory aren't the same thing. Extended memory is sometimes used
synonymously (but incorrectly) with XMS RAM, but actually XMS is the
specification for addressing extended memory. Extended memory is something
like linear-mapped RAM, unlike expanded memory (which is accessed through
"bank") ?
Anyway, why is DPMI better than VCPI? And why do fewer memory-managers
support DPMI as opposed to VCPI?

If I use SBOS the flight sounds such as guns and missle launches are
pretty bad and If I use Roland emulation with Megaem the sounds are turned

$ I ask because the 3d demo doesn't seem too 3d to me. Should I use
$ Dolby or no sound field ? should I disable my rear speakers?
Set it for no sound field, and turn off the rear speakers. GUS 3D uses
clever phasing of the stereo signal to cause a "psycho-acoustic" 3D
effect. No rear speakers are needed, in fact, they may interfere with
this effect, as could the also-clever phasing tricks used by Dolby
encoding/decoding. You should set the speakers at ear level, equidistant
from your head, so that head and speakers form a more-or-less equilateral
triangle.
There's a brand of stereo speakers that has GUS-like 3D built into them,
but I forget the manufacturer - oh yes! It's Polk. You need only a
single pair of them, and a normal stereo signal to get some really
startling 3D effects, with a broad "sweet spot."

$ Hello fellow Gussers,
$
$ Please help. I recently upgraded my gus with the upgrade in gus0038.ZIP.
$ Everything went smoothly during the install, but now I have notice
$ that some of my favorite midi files will not play in either windows or
$ in dos. The only clue I get is when I attempt to load these certain songs
$ into PLAYMIDI. PLAYMIDI gives me one of the following messages (depending
$ on the mid file I select):

$ Error patch info call for honky: DOS error
$
$ or
$
$ Error patch info call for piano.pat: DOS error
$ --
$
$ I went and looked in my directory that holds my .pat files and I couldn't
$ find either of the above mentioned patch files.
$
$ So, what has changed with the upgrade, in this regard?
$ The upgrade wouldn't have removed these patches, would it?
You installed gus0038 on top of the original distribution software. The
patches you get the errors on were changed around the 2.06 disks, but due
to space limitations, the new patches were not included with the gus0038
that you can download. If you order the gus0038 upgrade disks from
Gravis, you will get all the new patches, or you can download the 2.06a
disk set and get them there. The patches were not changed between 2.06
and gus0038, so it was thought that most people would not need to download
6Mb worth of patches for the latest release.

$ Attention Gravis: Why does Mega-Em's SB emulation work so much better

Simply put, MegaEm just works better. SBOS uses some hardware features of
the GUS to help it emulate a Sound Blaster. MegaEm uses features of the
386 CPU in protected mode to emulate the Sound Blaster, and needs no
assistance from the GUS to do it. The bottom line is that Jayeson did a
better job in software than the GUS engineers did in hardware.

$
$ Hi GUSers!
$ My problem is a bit complicated. Help me please to find a solution,
$ because I'm not able to do so.
$
$ 1.Many times it happens that GUS freezes or reboots my computer within
$ various situations.(eg. when I play Doom or play a sound file under
$ windows, or use Ail driver with certain games etc.) When it happens,
$ the GUS starts to play it's patches from the memory one by one a
$ kinda circulating until the boot reaches the ultrinit.
This is not the GUS crashing, this is the game crashing, leaving the GUS
in a state that causes it to cycle through whatever happens to be in its
memory. DOOM crashes all by itself for me unless I use F5 to throw away
config/autoexec. Dune ][ with the UltraMID patch also does this after
half an hour or so. I don't think UltraMID is to blame. Games aren't
noted for their friendliness to other software loaded in memory. You can
usually avoid most crashes by playing from a clean boot configuration.
Load nothing that is not necessary for playing the game. This solves my
DOOM, and most of the Dune ][, crashes.
Whining to game companies about <insert favorite game here> crashing when
your screen saver is loaded will always provoke the response "So unload
the screen saver." The facts of life are that your super-486 Turbo
computer must become a Nintendo to play most games reliably.
Multitasking, screen-saving, calendar-reminding, etc. are just not going
to work well while a game has the machine.

Subject: I HATE gus0038.zip !
I wrote to the Digest a day or two ago, and not much response, so I
thought I'd add a bit to my dilemma...
All right, how about this: After installing gus0038, not only does
Windows dump me into dos the first time after every boot, but other
things started going wrong. Megaem would crash my machine when I ran
emuset. One time it got far enough to give me an emm386 #6 error or
something, but usually it just fills up one screen row with "*"'s, puts
another "*" on the next lines, then drops down two more lines in a
tantalizing way--and hangs.
I also noticed that GUSMOD crashes my machine a lot now. It never
really used to....
So I tried renaming my \ultrasnd dir to \oldult and reinstalling from
gus0038...I realized that it really isn't even close to something you'd
need for a full gus installation...what exactly is it an upgrade from?
I will have to get out my 2.06b floppies and reinstall if I want to be
able to use the f*$&ing gus at all--and it really worked just fine
before I installed the stupid thing. But NOOOOO, I figured I'd have
better support for stuff with the new files...sadly mistaken. It's
going to be a real pain to install all the files again. Heck, the
install even crashed my machine when I first tried to reinstall after my
initial problems with gus0038, and I had to take out all the ultrainit
stuff in my \config.sys and \autoexec.bat files. Now you'd think that
an "upgrade" wouldn't be quite so buggy, wouldn't you.
So can anyone PLEASE clue me in as to why I'm having these problems?
I'm running MS-DOS 6.2 with EMM386, not a lot of TSRs, SMARTDRV, DOSKEY,
things like that are about all. I have a 486-33DX with 8MB of memory,
if that's any help.

Sbos 3.8 works, but sounds pretty lousy (I suspect a real soundblaster probably
would also) Anyways, this is the first game I've had to use sbos for, and it's

No, I wouldn't think that gus0038 has deleted patches.
Thinking logically about this (I haven't downloaded gus0038 yet)
it seems most likely that the various ini's and cfg's have been
replaced by ones which refer to patches which for one reason
or another you haven't got. If this is the answer, then
either change these to refer to the patches that you have got,
or download a newer set of patches from one of the disk sets.

Couple problems with the new software...
1) SBOS is screwed
Anytime you have SBOS loaded and you do something with either MIDI or
digitized (WAV, VOC, SND, whatever) sound, SBOS gives you an error in
SBOS.CFG and SBOSLIB.SBS whenever you access the hard drive.
And it gets worse
2) MODUS can't handle certain types of mods, especially good ones. (hehe)
3) Drivers aren't compatible with half the stuff I had before
4) Multiple Config support in INSTALL.EXE just doesn't work
When I think of more, I shall continue.

Twoddle! There are no incompatibilities if you program it in native mode!
Are they stupid?

within Windows, which works just as well as anything.
I tried this just to see if it would lock my computer like a few other

quality Symphony chip-set based motherboard. All other things (IRQ's,
NMI, 16bit DMA, and such) work fine for me, so this is surely a

What a crock. Origin uses the AIL drivers for most of it's programs
(including the later Ultimas). It would be a simple matter for them to
add support through Ultramid. After all, they support Roland devices
through an AIL driver. It's not as if they would have to add extra music.
The only problem with simply patching in the ADV files at this point is
that Origin tends to modify the ADV files to their own specifications.
As for that "highly recommend Sound Blaster" line...I think I'm going to
boycott Origin from now on.

Tom,
I've noticed problems with AfterDark and the GUS as well. But I
noticed the problems differed depending which screen saver I selected. For
example, if I understood you right, you said AD made all your WAV's play at a
low volume. As of right now (with Aquatic Realm) once AD kicks in, all the
WAV's on my system are played at top volume unless I go reset the mixer. No
matter what the mixer was set at before, after AD kicks in, the WAV volume
controls end up at max volume the next time I check it after AD. I gave up
for now trying to get AD to work with sound. But I agree, it makes no sense
that AD can have an effect on WAV's outside it. If anyone knows any way to
remedy the problem(s), please drop me a line.

Subject: What? No GUS support from Origin?!?!##!#
I can't believe they still won't support the Gravis Ultrasound even if WE
PAY them. I guess I won't be buying Origin software for a looooonnnnngggg
time. (Let's boycott Origin!)

Subject: X-Wing and music
I have a problem with X-Wing and the new Gravis
drivers(GUS0038.ZIP). Here's the problem: The intro works
fine, but when I start to play any part(pilot proving ground,
historic missions), the music starts up and then just cuts
out. I don't hear it again. I'm using Megaem and Emuset with
defaults on both(I've tried MT but no difference.) Also, when
I am approaching the Rebel Alliance ship(can't remember name),
I get a high-pitched whining sound mixed in with the music(an
instrument?) Does anyone else have these problems or a fix????
